Critical Properties of Halal Cosmetics

As Muslims, we need to be aware of the goods that we consume everyday, cosmetics are no exception. According to the LPPOM MUI (Indonesian Halal Inspection Body) there are critical properties for cosmetics to pass halal declaration. The statement says “… Cosmetic ingredients can come from questionable and unlawful sources”. LPPOM MUI also adds “some cosmetics are not water permeable so it will make our wudu’ unaccepted”.

The Standards of Halal Cosmetics

Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has released a Fatwa according this matter. It is discussing the critical points about cosmetics, particularly, four of which are about the ingredient sources. Ingredients that are come from pigs or pig derivation GMOs or human genes are unlawful. In addition, LPPOM MUI emphasizes to avoid ingredients with unknown methods of slaughtering or GMOs from unknown sources.

Water Permeability

What is water permeable cosmetics? Water permeable cosmetics are cosmetics that are using formulas that allow water and oxygen molecules pass through. Subsequently, this formula allows water and oxygen to get into the skin. Cosmetics that are not using water permeable formulas obstruct our Wudu’ to pass through into our skin. Thus, it potentially would make our Wudu’ and prayers unaccepted.
